Week 9 Thing 23 Summary

23 Things is Rejuvenating! I haven't felt so renewed in my library work since moving to S. Cumberland where the kids keep you thinking young. Thanks for taking some of the mystery out of what they are into now!

Summer was a good time to play at this, and 23 was just the right length with the fastest moving experiences at the end, when you're getting pretty tired of creating accounts, logins, and passwords. Glad we were given the choice of whether we felt comfortable enough with the site to open an account.

This is a gut feeling; but it seems being on the eve of Web 2.0, that many of these sites may not make it unless they start charging. One site said as much, that their sponsors are not support enough to run broad band. So it seems that 2007-2008 may be the two years in history in which the World Wide Web functions as dreamers like myself have envisioned it: largely FREE, unconstrained with video tools, so that the poorest in the world could participate, so that those who have different learning styles, including those with handicaps, have greater opportunities to have their contributions to this world seen and heard.

I like discovery, so I probably would participate in future opportunities like this one.

Week 9 Thing 22 Audiobooks

The Manual of Surgery is #1 on Project Gutenberg; what are people doing, operating on themselves? And, it's not even copyrighted??? but it is a 6th ed.. I'm real curious, but don't have time to check that one out.

Was surprised to find the Tao Teh King, which I don't know exactly what it is; but it does look like it has the Tao material that Dr. Wayne Dyer has been talking about on public TV.

Also looks like the Poe stories we are using for "One Book, One Allegany County" are available to listen and read here.

Week 9 Thing 21 podcasts

http://feeds.feedburner.com/houndTV-podcasts Is somewhat interesting. Haven't found any podcasts I really liked yet.

Week 9 Thing 20 YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4_W1KrUZ5A
tagged under people, Title: A Message to dead beat dads...from Dejuanp

The site is terrific, easy to use, loaded quickly, grouping works.
This video shows to me that it doesn't take alot of money for advertising anymore. And if you have a really good message, it will stand out!
And, it is the gread equalizer, coming from all corners of the earth, from all races, all ages, all economic and educational levels. YouTube should also show us the way to what services patrons will need from the library to be effective in this world: maybe a video-recording booth? or weekly video-recording sessions?

Week 8 Web 2.0 Awards

Guess-the-google, I couldn't even guess one of them! So settled on "One Sentence" as my favorite. What a site!!! As a writer of very, very, very long, most likely boring sentences, picking this site will show that I can appreciate brevity! Putting your story into one sentence is something they should teach all children, in Writing 101. What a great writing exercise to use with kids, to teach them to sum up what a book is about, esp for in book-suggestion blogs, or bookmarks. Easy to read! Tags cover nearly everything! Most popular are designated! Has a RSS feed.

Week 8 Thing 18 online productivity tools

Liked this, all except having to give them my password to my blog. That's why my doc isn't here. Zoho Writer has some features I wish Word had.

Week 6 Thing 15 Web 2.0 & libraries

It was by accident that I'm working on Thing 15 at this time, but it couldn't have worked out any more perfect. Presently I'm writing the pr for "Teen Lair" the library's new Teen site on MySpace. Having looked at survey material from The National School Boards Association, followed by the rebuttal written by Nancy Willard nwill...@csriu.org
Nancy Willard, M.S., J.D. Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use http://csriu.org

All this info left me in a quagmire. Reading the stuff on Web 2.0 allowed me to think staight for myself!

Week 6 Technorati and tags on blogs

Ended up using the back button on this site to get me back to pages I couldn't seem to find again. At one point it looked like political terms were the most used tags, but all of a sudden it seemed more tech driven. The buzy wave pool in Japan the was just posted on Boing Boing was wild!!!! Watch the video of it.

I would NOT SUGGEST the Bill Hicks Video on marketing! I actually started to download one video that I was afraid to watch. I was curious but had no real idea what it was going to be. Always fear that "big brother" is out there or in there watching. So this whole 23 Things has been frustrating!!!

Are generations of kids going to be made to feel bad because they're curious about certain information??? It's difficult to tell if something is good or bad without really looking at it on here, or most of these new technologies.

Week 6 Thing 13 Del.icio.us

This is cool, as one of my favorite hobbies is collecting magazine articles and filing them!

Week 7 Sandbox

That was cool, but my URL wouldn't work even though it's there. Just thought of another use: making up a travel itinerary or list of books to read before visiting a certain place.

Week 7 Thing 16 Wikis

This is what I thought the Internet was actually first designed to be. It seems like the Internet is a mushroom that has sent out spores called wikis. Interesting that Bull Run Library actually has a patron doing that wiki. Would be neat to try having a "One Book, One Allegany County" Wiki for this year's author: Poe. Think would be cool tool for brainstorming, which I really enjoy doing.

Week 5 Thing 11 Library Thing

This is cool, but I don't know how they get away with including the Cover art on this site. That is so copyrighted!!

Week 5 Thing 12 Rollyo

Should now be able to keep up on the funnies! Easy to use; I think. http://www.rollyo.com/search.html?q=Funnies&sid=306603

Week 5 Thing 10 Image generators

Letter James seemed the easiest to use without having uploaded any personal pictures, which I hope to do soon. I do want to make an Avatar!!!

Didn't like being thrown right into an obscene site right at the beginning of The Generator Blog.

Week 4 Thing 9 MERLIN & library feeds

I Googled the specific sites of interest to see if they would have feeds. Hardly any of them did. But doing it that way, I know exactly the quality of the info. Topix.net and Syndic8.com was one productive way for me.

I wasn't able to find many by going to participant's blogs, but I understand why I think. Your feeds seem kind of personal; so, I didn't want to put them on my blog either.

My interest in MERLIN grew when entering the group area. Surprised to see Leading from any position there.

Kept thinking about how we could send out library news to everyone with a feed. Not sure why that hasn't happened yet?

e mërkurë, 18 korrik 2007

Week 4 Thing 8 RSS feeds

RSS probably will let me be more quickly connected to the world of arts, music, and new developments in the library world. It would not be my choice of ways to get the world and national news. I'm not one for being attached to a computer even more than I already am.

Week 3 Thing 7 Tech Toughts

I just wish the legal system would come up with a new copyright system that allows for easier sharing. I like the different levels of sharing system used by Flicker!

Week 3 Thing 6 Mash-ups & Third Party Sites

Like the captionizer! A caption like an egg that might break open to something new!

Week 3, Thing 5 Exploring Flickr

When I saw this picture, I thought who would put this on the Internet, so I checked out the guy's site. I never dreamed that I would have a duplicate family in some virtual parallel universe!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/parcydarks/583548882/

You have to have to look at all the pages on the link to really get the scare of how alike this family is to mine. I was really into telling my real live family about Flickr, but now fear seeing some of my neice's footage from when she got her new video camera!

Week 1, Thing 2: Pointers from Lifelong Learners

Hardest of the 7 1/2 Habits is #4 having confidence in yourself as a competent effective learner. This is especially true when it comes to tech stuff. I move on way too quickly.

Easiest of the 7 1/2 Habits is accepting responsibility for your own learning. This sounds like a conflict with what I have put for the hardest, but it isn't. I'm always trying to learn something!

Pretending

I'll be pretending I'm @the beach while learning 23. Learning there is always freeing!
